SAGEBRUSH SOIREE

Stanley, Idaho -- 150 people gathered at Drew and Linda Lawler’s Sawtooth Valley Ranch near Stanley on Saturday, July 29, to enjoy the Sagebrush Soiree, the Sawtooth Society’s premier fundraising event. This year’s theme celebrated wildflowers of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area.

Guests, who paid $200 each to attend the event, arrived at 6:00 p.m to socialize and dine on the grounds outside the ranch house and in the shadow of the Sawtooth Mountains.

A raffle and auction followed dinner. Stanley resident, Marc Kottraba, won the raffle and selected a vacation in Maui, Hawaii, as his prize. Spurred on by auctioneer Steve Wright, guests bid on the following items: a trip to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon; a drift boat trip on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River; a weeklong stay at a private retreat in the Sawtooth Valley; a guided steelhead fishing trip on the upper Salmon River; an outing with an Idaho Fish and Game biologist as he tracks wolves in central Idaho; a guided cross country ski trip and use of a yurt in the Sawtooth Mountains; a day hike with noted backcountry author Margaret Fuller; a guided horse packing trip in the Sawtooth Mountains; and a day in the field with wildflower expert and author Doreen Sadler.

Guests also pledged financial support for two special Sawtooth Society projects: capital improvements to the Bethine and Frank Church Overlook on Galena Summit; and construction of a facility to house the Sawtooth Volunteer Fire Department and other local emergency services.

The event generated revenue of $85,000 to further the work of the Sawtooth Society in working on behalf of the 756,000-acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area and all who live, work and visit the area.

PROJECTS NEWS

Stanley, August 23, 2006 -- Organizations providing important facilities and services to people in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) have received grants totaling $57,700 from the Sawtooth Society so far in 2006.

Grant recipients include: the U.S. Forest Service -- $36,900 to maintain trails in the Sawtooth, White Cloud and Boulder Mountains, interpretive programs at Redfish Lake Visitors Center, seasonal volunteers, a camping brochure, repairs to the historic Pole Creek ranger station and construction of a corral at the Fourth of July work center; Sawtooth Volunteer Fire Department -- $10,000 to aid in the construction of a new fire station in Stanley; Sawtooth Search and Rescue -- $5,000 for emergency equipment; the Sawtooth Ski Club --$5,000 for equipment to groom cross-country ski trails; and Sawtooth Music Festival -- $800 to help fund an event held July 29 in Stanley.

Since its founding in 1997, the Society has invested more than $400,000 to improve the infrastructure needs of the SNRA. More than half of the funding has come from Society members, with the balance coming from revenue generated by the sale of the special Idaho motor vehicle license plate that features a mountain goat against a backdrop of alpine peaks. The Society manages the license plate program under a contract with the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.

The Sawtooth Society is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that works on behalf of the 756,000-acre Sawtooth National Recreation Area and those who live, work and visit there.
