ADVOCACY

Mobilized policymakers and the public to address the threats facing the SNRA, including highly visible surface mining on state-owned lands within the SNRA.

Encouraged the Congress and Administration to restore the SNRA’s general operating budget to alleviate the imposed 25% budget reduction.

Established a coalition of public and private organizations to address the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the area.

Championed development of a long-term, strategic plan – Sawtooth Vision 20/20 — for the management of the SNRA. This plan was the result of a collaborative effort by representatives of more than 25 area stakeholders and is now being implemented.



PRESERVING OPEN SPACE

Stopped the most immediate threat of high-density subdivision development in the SNRA by negotiating the purchase of a conservation easement that both protected the owner’s private property rights and the public’s interests in preserving open space.

Worked with the Administration and Congress to secure $17 million in federal funds for the purchase of conservation easements in the SNRA. Since 1998 the agency has secured conservation easements on 13 properties, totaling nearly 3,000 acres.

Published a booklet to increase public understanding and fair application of federal regulations for the use and development of private lands in the SNRA.


ENHANCING RECREATION

Contributions have been made to local community organizations like the Salmon River Clinic, Sawtooth Valley Volunteer Fire Department, the Sawtooth Historical and Interpretive Association, Sawtooth Ski Club, Sawtooth Search and Rescue and Mountain Mamas for a variety of projects to enhance the experiences of and safety for visitors and residents alike.

Initiated and provide ongoing management of a special Idaho motor vehicle license plate program – the goat plate — that is annually generating thousands of dollars for recreation-related projects in the area.

Led dozens of volunteer projects to rebuild fences, clean-up highways and maintain trails within the SNRA.

Invested over $500,000 on 100 projects to maintain trails, campsites and other recreational facilities and services in the area as show below.
